| SANSKRIT training with an introduction to Patanjali Yoga Sutras and chanting at Mysore |
|
| Location: | YADAVAGIRI, Mysore, India |
| Type: | Sanskrit training, introduction to Patanjali Yoga Sutras and chanting |
| Duration: | Weekly classes |
| Course Type: | NON-RESIDENTIAL |
The Course:
This course has been designed for students with no knowledge of the Sanskrit language. Emphasis will be placed on the basic listening, reading, and writing of the language. The reading and writing system will be introduced in a very systematic manner. Basic sentences will be drawn from the Sanskrit Literature. Simple Vedic Mantras from the Vedas and Upanishad, verses from the Bhagavad Gita and the sutras from the Yoga Sutras will be read.
Sanskrit is a classical language and the liturgical language of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The name Sanskrit means "refined", "consecrated" and "sanctified". It has always been regarded as the 'high' language and used mainly for religious and scientific discourse.
Today Sanskrit is used mainly in Hindu religious rituals as a ceremonial language for hymns and mantras.
The course also introduces you to Patanjali Yoga Sutras and Chanting.
What are the Yoga Sutras and who is Patanjali?
At least forty different English translations of the Yoga Sutras are extant, standing as a human testament to how such a profound, wise, and inspiring book based on Universal Truth is celebrated in the form of a very rich and wide diversity.
Patanjali is not the inventor of yoga, but rather yoga's most well known systematiser and compiler. What has become known simply as the "Yoga Sutras" (meaning "thread"), is actually a compendium of an ancient pre-existing oral yoga tradition consisting of practical advice on the yogic path. It consists of four chapters (called padas) written in the Sanskrit language approximately 2000 years ago in India.
Because authentic yoga has been mainly an oral tradition (versus a written tradition), yoga practices and teachings precede any written texts, but how far in the ancient past, it is impossible to pin down, mainly because of the lack of prior literature.
The Yoga Sutras show that yoga is aimed at universal truth, beyond any one religion, culture, era, philosophy, ideology, race or language.
Chanting
Everything in the universe has its own sound and vibration. When you chant you merge with the vibration of the sound you are chanting and becoming one with that energy. In the recitation of Sanskrit Mantras the sound is very important, for it can bring transformation in you while leading you to power and strength.
Chanting cannot be established through reasoning and intellect. It can be experienced or realised only through devotion.

Sanskrit
We are one, bound to each other with love and respect.
We serve disciplined and courageous, to fight against all low tendencies and false values, within us and in the world outside.
We live a noble and honest life of sacrifice and in service for others.
May grace flow through us and to the world around us, so that we touch others and being devoted to the supreme Self.
Om Tat Sat
AUM is Bija Manta or Seed mantra and thus, the progenitor of all other mantras. All sounds (phonemes) of all languages, alphabets, morphemes, words, and sentence take their origin from AUM. AUM vibrates in all sounds, syllables and words. The transcendental sound of AUM is audible only to Yogis. Utterance of AUM proceeds from the navel, vibrates and ends in the nostrils, where the final intonation (Anusvaara / after-sound) takes place, which is represented by Chandrabindu (a dot over a line or crescent).
