What is Yoga?

Yoga is life itself. It is the most humane subject, encompassing science, art and philosophy.

It arose more than ten thousand years ago in the Sub-continent. It grew from the need to develop an understanding of the various aspects of our experience, from the physical and through, to the subtle. Throughout humanity it has proved an invaluable tool for dealing with the challenges of human existence.

Yoga is the experience of unity, harmony and oneness. Yoga is life which embraces the inner and outer realities rather then it being a physical exercise. It is an individual experience that cannot be explained intellectually. It's a living knowledge and activity.

Yoga has remained steady, without change as the path laid down by our ancient seers. Unlike medicine, yoga has never changed its principles. It has given clear cut guidelines to follow.

Your Progress

It will have little to do with how "perfectly" you can do the postures. Few of us ever do the postures "perfectly". Instead, it will have to do with how well you understand each posture. In Yoga there is no standard of comparison except yourself. To be 'perfect' in Yoga is to do the best you can do.

Your reason for wanting to practice yoga or your reason for currently practicing yoga is not important. The important thing is that you have overcome previous prejudices and postponements to try yoga for yourself.
